The Short Answer
If you're looking for high-quality organic cotton fabric online, you want a supplier that carries GOTS-certified or USDA fabric, offers a genuine range of constructions and weights, and is transparent about fiber content and sourcing. Nature's Fabrics checks all of those boxes. Browse our full organic cotton fabric collection or keep reading to understand exactly what to look for and why it matters.
What Makes Organic Cotton Fabric "High Quality"?
Not all organic cotton is created equal, and the word "organic" on a product listing doesn't always mean what you think it means. Here's what actually separates high-quality organic cotton fabric from the rest.
Certification
The most important thing to look for is GOTS certification (Global Organic Textile Standard) or USDA Certified. GOTS is the gold standard for organic textiles. It covers the entire supply chain, from the farm where the cotton is grown all the way through processing, dyeing, and finishing. A GOTS-certified fabric has been verified to meet strict environmental and social criteria at every stage. USDA covers cotton fibers grown in the USA.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is another certification worth looking for. It certifies that the finished fabric has been tested for harmful substances, even if it doesn't cover the full supply chain the way GOTS does.
If a supplier can't tell you what certifications their organic cotton carries, that's a red flag.
Fiber Content and Construction
High-quality organic cotton fabric should clearly state the fiber content and construction. Is it 100% organic cotton, or a blend? Is it a jersey knit, interlock, rib knit, or woven? These details directly affect how the fabric performs and what it's suitable for. A reputable supplier will list this information clearly for every product.
Weight and Hand Feel
Fabric weight (measured in GSM, or grams per square meter) tells you how light or heavy a fabric is. A quality supplier will list GSM so you can compare fabrics and choose the right weight for your project. Hand feel is harder to assess online, which is why ordering swatches before committing to yardage is always a smart move.
Consistent Dyeing and Finishing
High-quality organic cotton fabric should have even color, consistent texture, and a finish that holds up through washing. Low-quality fabric often shows uneven dyeing, pilling after the first wash, or significant shrinkage beyond what's expected for natural fibers.
Which Type of Organic Cotton Fabric Do You Need?
Organic cotton comes in many constructions, and the right one depends entirely on your project. Here's a breakdown of what we carry and what each is best suited for.
Organic Cotton Jersey
Organic Cotton Jersey is the most versatile organic cotton knit. It's lightweight, drapey, and soft with a natural two-way stretch. It's the go-to fabric for t-shirts, casual tops, lightweight dresses, and children's garments. The smooth face and slightly textured back are characteristic of all jersey knits.
For projects that need more stretch and recovery, our Organic Cotton/Spandex Jersey adds four-way stretch while keeping the organic cotton base.
Organic Cotton Interlock
Organic Cotton Interlock is a double-faced knit with a smooth surface on both sides. It's heavier and more stable than jersey, with less tendency to curl at the edges, making it easier to sew and more opaque in finished garments. It's one of the best fabrics for baby clothing, children's garments, and fitted tops where coverage and durability matter.
Organic Cotton Rib Knit
Organic Cotton Rib Knit has a distinctive ribbed texture and exceptional stretch and recovery. It's the standard choice for neckbands, cuffs, and waistbands on sweatshirts and t-shirts, but it also works beautifully as a main fabric for fitted tank tops, bodysuits, and form-fitting dresses.
Organic Cotton Fleece, Terry, Sherpa, and Velour
For heavier, cozier projects, our Organic Cotton Fleece, Terry, Sherpa, and Velour collection covers everything from sweatshirt fleece and french terry to plush sherpa and velour. These fabrics are ideal for hoodies, sweatshirts, robes, baby blankets, and home textiles.
Organic Cotton Wovens, Flannel, Denim, and Thermal
Not every project calls for a knit. Our Organic Cotton Flannel, Thermal, Denim, and Woven Fabric collection covers structured woven options for quilting, garment sewing, and home goods. Organic cotton flannel is a perennial favorite for baby items and cozy pajamas; organic cotton denim brings sustainability to a classic fabric.
What to Watch Out for When Shopping Online
Online fabric shopping has real advantages (wider selection, better prices, shop from anywhere) but also a few pitfalls worth knowing about.
- Vague certifications. "Natural" and "eco-friendly" are marketing terms, not certifications. Look for GOTS or OEKO-TEX specifically.
- Missing fiber content. If a listing doesn't clearly state the fiber content and construction, move on. You need to know exactly what you're buying.
- No GSM listed. Without weight information, it's hard to know if a fabric is appropriate for your project. A quality supplier lists this.
- No swatch option. Ordering swatches before buying yardage is standard practice for a reason. If a supplier doesn't offer swatches, that's a limitation worth noting.
- Unusually low prices. Genuine GOTS-certified organic cotton costs more to produce than conventional cotton. If the price seems too good to be true, the certification probably isn't what it claims to be.
