If you’re looking for eco-friendly fabrics to add to your stash, then you might want to check out our line of hemp solids and prints. This highly sustainable material is becoming one of our most popular items here at Nature’s Fabrics. Here’s what you need to know about what hemp fabric is, how it is made, and a few project ideas to try out.
What is Hemp?
Hemp is a dioecious plant known to be one of the fastest growing species on the planet. For this reason, industrial hemp is harvested for the stems, which can be used for a wide variety of eco-friendly products like fabrics, building materials, paper, rope, and so much more.
How is Hemp Fabric Made?
Eco-friendly hemp fabric is made by harvesting the long fibers from the stem of the plant. The fibers are then removed from the bark through a special process referred to as retting. There are several ways that retting can be accomplished, but the most common involves submerging the stalks in water.
From there, the fibers are woven into fabric, which can have a variety of different textures. For example, there’s jersey hemp fabric that has a little bit of a stretch and is ideal for clothing. There’s also hemp linen, hemp thermal, and many different others.
